What an amazing campaign this has been!

Back in February, when I filed to run for Congress, I was a political newcomer. We knew we would have to learn how to run a lean and effective political campaign as we went along — and we did.

But most of all, we learned how deeply dissatisfied the people of Indiana’s 9th District are with the status quo. This even applies to Republicans and Independents, who voted in remarkable numbers for me in places like Floyd and Crawford counties.

They know that middle class and working families define this nation, and we’ve been squeezed down for too long. We don’t have a voice in the decisions that have so much bearing on our lives, but this election’s results show that people aren’t content just to sit by without making our voices heard.

I look forward to standing by your side in 2014, when we’ll have another opportunity to fight for affordable health care, sustainable wage jobs, great education, and the basic infrastructure that helps our District thrive.

If I’ve gained anything from this campaign, it has been an indelible admiration for the people of this District, for the hard-working families who keep this District running — and a heightened desire to serve.

Yoder Concedes, Echoes Campaign’s Middle-Class Theme

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA — Despite coming up short in her upset bid, 9th District Congressional candidate Shelli Yoder said this election sent a message that voters are not entirely happy with the direction of the country.

“I spoke to literally thousands of voters over the past several months, and I know there are deep concerns in the 9th District,” Yoder said before she greeted a supportive and still enthusiastic throng of supporters at Monroe County Democratic headquarters.

“Back in February, when my husband encouraged me to run for the seat, he said we’d figure it out as we went, and we did,” she said. “We learned, we fought, we got out there and met people all across the 9th District. It has been an amazing experience to meet so many Hoosiers and to hear about their lives and concerns, and I will continue to work to help the District in every way I can.”

Before joining supporters, Yoder phoned her opponent, Todd Young, to congratulate him and thank him for running a civil campaign.

During her concession speech, Yoder thanked her staff, which is modest in number, and her much larger group of core volunteers. And she revisited the theme that defined the campaign.

“Since Day One, we said we were running to make sure the middle class gets a seat at the table,” she said. “Middle class and working families are what defines this nation, and they’ve been squeezed down for too long. They don’t have a voice in the decisions that have so much bearing on their lives, and that’s just wrong. I expect voters to keep a close eye on the political process and to speak their minds clearly in two years.”

Yoder ran a strong grassroots campaign despite being outspent drastically and written off by most pundits and media.

“Shelli’s campaign gave voice to a very real segment of the population who saw something good coming from her candidacy,” Yoder campaign manager Katie Carlson said. “We’re proud of that effort, even if it fell short tonight.”

Yoder said 9th District voters have not heard the last from her. “This has been an amazing journey, and it only heightens my determination to serve the public,” she said.

Yoder Takes Your Voice, Your Values Tour to the Street for Final Push

For the final five days of the election, 9th District Congressional candidate Shelli Yoder will barnstorm the entire 9th District in a 13-county blitz dubbed the “Your Voice, Your Values” tour.

The tour kicks off at Friday morning at Hardee’s restaurant in Paoli, then heads for Harrison County Democratic HQ in Corydon, where Yoder and supporters will connect with gubernatorial candidate John Gregg’s “Workhorse” tour at 9:30.

Both campaigns then travel to Crawford County Junior-Senior High School in Marengo at 10:30.

The Yoder tour then heads to English for door-to-door campaigning and greeting early voters at the Courthouse.

Lunch is at the Row Boat in French Licks, followed by more door-to-door. The tour them moves to Paoli to greet early voters, then heads for Washington County for door-to-door in Salem, followed by dinner at Tasty House. The day ends at Salem Senior Center, where the Paul Smith Band will perform.

The tour resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Clark County Courthouse in Jeffersonville, where Yoder will greet early voters.

President Clinton Endorses Shelli Yoder for Congress

Bill Clinton, our nation’s 42nd President, today announced his endorsement of Shelli Yoder for Congress in Indiana’s 9th District.

“I heartily endorse Shelli Yoder for Congress,” President Clinton said, “because as a working mother, she knows the country works better with a strong middle class. She understands that advancing equal opportunity and promoting decent wages and employment are both morally right and good economics. Shelli has great leadership qualities and won’t engage in the hyper-partisanship that overtook our Congress and left our nation gridlocked at the time we most needed strong leadership. Congress needs more fresh and authentic voices. Congress needs more genuine leaders like Shelli Yoder.”

President Clinton’s endorsement is the latest on a list that includes former 9th District Congressman Lee Hamilton, former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh, former Indiana First Lady Judy O’Bannon, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (KY-3) and former Kentucky Gov. Martha Layne Collins.

The Louisville Courier-Journal also endorsed Yoder, saying, “Ms. Yoder’s story is simple and refreshing. A wife, mother and busy professional at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, she decided to run with little visibility and or organization because she believes someone needs to step up and truly represent the hard-working and struggling families in her district.”

The C-J said 9th District voters “have a remarkable opportunity to elect a highly appealing candidate who offers a clear contrast with her Republican incumbent opponent, Todd Young, elected two years ago on a wave of tea party enthusiasm.”

‘It’s Time to Put Middle Class Families First’

Shelli Yoder, who is running for Congress in Indiana’s 9th District, today began airing a television advertisement that contrasts her support for middle class families with her opponent’s plan to gut programs that are important to those families.

“For generations, Medicare and Social Security have protected our seniors from sickness and poverty,” Yoder says. “Yet our Congressman, Todd Young, wants to privatize Social Security and turn Medicare into a voucher program.

“Not if I’m in Congress.”
