9th District Congressional candidate Shelli Yoder today strongly criticized the recently announced Republican 2013 budget proposal as an attack on middle class families, senior citizens, and the poor. She made her remarks standing outside the office building of Republican 9th District Congressman Todd Young, a supporter of the Republican budget drafted by Congressman Paul Ryan.

“Middle class families in this country are hurting” said Yoder. “Yet, the Ryan-Young Budget would cut relief to working families, effectively end Medicare as we know it, and slash food assistance programs for low-income children while giving more massive tax breaks to the rich.”

“This proposed budget represents a fundamental difference in visions between Congressman Young and myself,” Yoder said. “I believe in strengthening Medicare, investing in education, and providing job training so our workers can compete for the new jobs of the 21st century. Congressman Young wants to dismantle Medicare, substantially cut Pell grants, and nearly end funding for job training. The choice in November couldn’t be clearer.”

Yoder pointed out Republicans have repeatedly proposed privatizing Medicare and Social Security. “Medicare and Social Security are the federal cornerstones of independent living for our seniors,” Yoder said. “The path proposed by the Ryan-Young budget is a path to poverty and a broken promise to millions of American senior citizens after a lifetime of hard work.”
