Bloomington resident Shelli Yoder, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Indiana’s 9th Congressional District seat, issued a statement today vowing to prioritize federal funding to end violence against women and improve health outcomes for all Hoosiers.
Citing recent statistics from Indiana University and Center for Disease Control researchers, Yoder said the current climate of violence against girls in grades 9-12 in Indiana is unacceptable. “High school girls in Indiana have the second-highest rate of being raped in the country,” Yoder noted. “Yet the recently released budget proposal authored by Paul Ryan and endorsed by Todd Young slashes funding for violence against women initiatives. Furthermore, the Ryan-Young budget would devastate vital social services for women and their families, while giving trillions of dollars back to the wealthiest Americans and largest multi-national corporations.”
“In Congress, I would fight to increase funding for domestic violence prevention, protect Medicaid funding for vulnerable women and men with disabilities, and preserve safety net programs, including food stamps, Head Start, Pell Grants, and women’s preventive health care.” Referencing the recently released 2012 County Health Rankings report, Yoder noted that several of the counties in the 9th District rank near the bottom in health outcomes and another report ranked Indiana 43rd among states for women’s quality of life. “Government spending must be brought under control, but not at the expense of the safety and well-being of women and girls and those who are most vulnerable living in some of Indiana’s most challenged communities.”
Shelli Yoder’s key issues are creating jobs and expanding economic opportunity for all Hoosier families. Her plan includes increasing opportunities for worker training, funding for health research initiatives, and investing in infrastructure and green technologies. Yoder is one of five Democrats running in the 9th District race to unseat Todd Young this November. The Democratic Primary is May 8.
