Former Kentucky Gov. Martha Layne Collins, the first female elected to that state’s highest office, will host a rally on behalf of Shelli Yoder, who is running for Congress in Indiana’s 9th District.

Former Indiana State Senator Connie Sipes of New Albany will be the mistress of ceremonies.

The event is set for Monday, October 22, from 5-7 p.m. at Kye’s, 500 Missouri Ave. in Jeffersonville.

The rally will also showcase the slate of Democratic women candidates in Indiana, and several of those candidates will be at the rally, including Senator Vi Simpson (Lieutenant Governor), Glenda Ritz (Superintendent of Public Instruction), Sandy Blanton (State Representative), and Sharon Grabowski (State Representative).

“If you want to know how difficult life is today for working families, ask women. They’re on the front lines,” Gov. Collins said. “Women are out in the workplace earning a living, and they’re also very involved at home, taking care of their children and making sure their kids get the best education and health care possible.

“But when you look at the issues that affect women, so much work remains. Women still do not earn equal pay for equal work. Insurance companies charge women higher premiums than men for the same coverage. Women are still fighting to control the decisions that affect their own bodies. The list goes on. The answer, of course, lies in electing more women. Only 17 percent of the U.S. Congress, for example, is female.

“This is a rally to support Shelli on the eve of her first debate, and also to show the collective strength of Indiana’s women candidates in 2012. We encourage everyone who is concerned about our nation’s direction to come out to Kye’s and hear from our soon-to-be elected leaders.”
