2012 Democratic Candidate for Congress, 9th District

I grew up in a typical middle-class family. Mom and Dad taught us that discipline and hard work could get us where we wanted to go in life. They encouraged us to work as teenagers – I took my first paper route when I was 13. They supported me in my competitive swimming career, where discipline and focus helped me become a high school All-American. My wife and I are raising our two sons, Grey and Reid, with the same values, but we aren’t sure a strong work ethic is enough anymore. I got where I am today through hard work and a good education. Those things aren’t getting the middle class ahead in today’s economy, and that’s wrong.
It was my frustration with the gridlock and misplaced priorities in Washington that inspired me to run for Congress. Hoosier families need good-paying jobs, Hoosier communities need to be able to compete in a global marketplace, and Hoosier taxpayers need relief. Instead of focusing on our struggling economy, Congress has focused on attacking workers, women, seniors, the unemployed, and college students. Washington’s priorities are just plain wrong, and our current Congressman, Todd Young, has consistently voted in ways that have damaged the middle class.
That’s why I support Shelli Yoder for Congress. Over the past few months, I witnessed Shelli in action as a fellow candidate. Despite having to compete with her during the Primary, I grew to admire Shelli. Just like me, she comes from a middle-class background and values hard work, discipline, and education. Her family struggled through hard times, and she understands that Hoosier families are hurting.
Two weeks ago, our Party selected our nominee. Now it’s time to unify behind Shelli as she challenges Todd Young. Together, we can create jobs; protect Social Security and Medicare; bring constituent service back to the Ninth District; and ensure our budget and taxes benefits the middle class. We can make a difference for Hoosier families and ensure that we all have the opportunity for a better quality of life. It’s time to put Washington’s priorities back to work for us.
