Mayor of Bloomington, IN

Something’s happening in the Ninth District Congressional race. Something we don’t often see.

A person simply got in her car, drove to the State Capitol, and filed to run for office not because party bosses recruited her, not because big monied special interests fueled her campaign, not because she’s interested in launching a political career…

Instead it’s someone who filed for office motivated simply and elegantly because she was called to do so out of a personal obligation to improve the lives of others. Because she wouldn’t have been able to look her kids in the eyes and explain why she didn’t do something to protect their future and the future of all our kids.

That’s the kind of motivation, commitment, and selflessness that needs to be rewarded now more than ever.

I’m so pleased to be able to report that right here in Monroe County, we have a fresh, new candidate fighting hard to put the issues that really affect our families back at the top of the national agenda … Shelli Yoder.

Shelli Yoder was born and raised in rural Indiana. During the recession of the 1980s, her family lost their small business. Shelli had to work to help out. To win scholarships for college, she competed in the Miss Indiana pageant. Then as Miss Indiana, Shelli traveled to all 92 Indiana Counties advocating for health and education opportunities for Hoosier families.

Middle Class people in Indiana and the nation truly deserve — and certainly need — a voice at the table talking about the issues that keep them up at night. How are we going to pay our bills? What kind of future am I leaving my kids? Why aren’t my concerns being addressed by the people I elect to represent me?

Instead, just look at the presidential race on the Republican side to see what some politicians are talking about: that our President is a snob because he encourages our kids to go to college, that the “Safety Net” is all that’s needed to assist the poor, that the rights of working people must be eroded to improve our economy…

In Congress, Shelli will fight for Hoosier families and the issues that matter most to us. She’ll help to strategically position Indiana for quality job creation. She’ll recruit new green jobs, find funds for infrastructure jobs, and promote new 21st century job creation. Shelli will fight for opportunities to retrain our workers.

She’ll stand up for quality education for our children, and defend affordable health care for our families. And Shelli Yoder won’t back down when national Republicans try to cut or privatize Medicare and Social Security for our seniors.

As someone who has worked hard to make Monroe County a better place, I urge you to find out more about Shelli Yoder and to take a moment to forward this email to your family and friends.

But most of all, I urge you to get out to vote in the May 8 Primary Election. And if you really want to make a difference in Washington, please join me in casting your vote for Shelli Yoder.

She’ll speak up loud and clear for the issues that count for our community and for your family.

Thank you!
