What an amazing campaign this has been!

Back in February, when I filed to run for Congress, I was a political newcomer. We knew we would have to learn how to run a lean and effective political campaign as we went along — and we did.

But most of all, we learned how deeply dissatisfied the people of Indiana’s 9th District are with the status quo. This even applies to Republicans and Independents, who voted in remarkable numbers for me in places like Floyd and Crawford counties.

They know that middle class and working families define this nation, and we’ve been squeezed down for too long. We don’t have a voice in the decisions that have so much bearing on our lives, but this election’s results show that people aren’t content just to sit by without making our voices heard.

I look forward to standing by your side in 2014, when we’ll have another opportunity to fight for affordable health care, sustainable wage jobs, great education, and the basic infrastructure that helps our District thrive.

If I’ve gained anything from this campaign, it has been an indelible admiration for the people of this District, for the hard-working families who keep this District running — and a heightened desire to serve.

Thank you for standing with me this year. It has been my privilege and my honor to run for Congress with your support.

Thank you,

Shelli

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA — Despite coming up short in her upset bid, 9th District Congressional candidate Shelli Yoder said this election sent a message that voters are not entirely happy with the direction of the country.

“I spoke to literally thousands of voters over the past several months, and I know there are deep concerns in the 9th District,” Yoder said before she greeted a supportive and still enthusiastic throng of supporters at Monroe County Democratic headquarters.

“Back in February, when my husband encouraged me to run for the seat, he said we’d figure it out as we went, and we did,” she said. “We learned, we fought, we got out there and met people all across the 9th District. It has been an amazing experience to meet so many Hoosiers and to hear about their lives and concerns, and I will continue to work to help the District in every way I can.”

Before joining supporters, Yoder phoned her opponent, Todd Young, to congratulate him and thank him for running a civil campaign.

During her concession speech, Yoder thanked her staff, which is modest in number, and her much larger group of core volunteers. And she revisited the theme that defined the campaign.

“Since Day One, we said we were running to make sure the middle class gets a seat at the table,” she said. “Middle class and working families are what defines this nation, and they’ve been squeezed down for too long. They don’t have a voice in the decisions that have so much bearing on their lives, and that’s just wrong. I expect voters to keep a close eye on the political process and to speak their minds clearly in two years.”

Yoder ran a strong grassroots campaign despite being outspent drastically and written off by most pundits and media.

“Shelli’s campaign gave voice to a very real segment of the population who saw something good coming from her candidacy,” Yoder campaign manager Katie Carlson said. “We’re proud of that effort, even if it fell short tonight.”

Yoder said 9th District voters have not heard the last from her. “This has been an amazing journey, and it only heightens my determination to serve the public,” she said.

–30—

President Clinton Endorses Shelli Yoder for Congress

Bill Clinton, our nation’s 42nd President, today announced his endorsement of Shelli Yoder for Congress in Indiana’s 9th District.

“I heartily endorse Shelli Yoder for Congress,” President Clinton said, “because as a working mother, she knows the country works better with a strong middle class. She understands that advancing equal opportunity and promoting decent wages and employment are both morally right and good economics. Shelli has great leadership qualities and won’t engage in the hyper-partisanship that overtook our Congress and left our nation gridlocked at the time we most needed strong leadership. Congress needs more fresh and authentic voices. Congress needs more genuine leaders like Shelli Yoder.”

President Clinton’s endorsement is the latest on a list that includes former 9th District Congressman Lee Hamilton, former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh, former Indiana First Lady Judy O’Bannon, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (KY-3) and former Kentucky Gov. Martha Layne Collins.

The Louisville Courier-Journal also endorsed Yoder, saying, “Ms. Yoder’s story is simple and refreshing. A wife, mother and busy professional at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, she decided to run with little visibility and or organization because she believes someone needs to step up and truly represent the hard-working and struggling families in her district.”

The C-J said 9th District voters “have a remarkable opportunity to elect a highly appealing candidate who offers a clear contrast with her Republican incumbent opponent, Todd Young, elected two years ago on a wave of tea party enthusiasm.”

CORYDON, INDIANA — Drawing a stark contrast with her opponent, 9th District Congressional candidate Shelli Yoder laid out a strong vision for the district during a debate tonight at Corydon Central High School in Harrison County.

Just as she did during last week’s debate in Franklin, Yoder hammered on her campaign theme that the election presents a clear choice: Her vision, which puts middle class and working families first, or her opponent’s, as laid out in the Ryan-Young budget, which boils down to gutting the middle class to pay for tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

“I’ll be a Congresswoman who fights for the family room, not the board room,” Yoder said during the debate.

Yoder praised the O’Bannon family, whose publishing company sponsored the debate, and noted that former Gov. Frank O’Bannon, his widow Judy, and their friend Lee Hamilton, the longtime 9th District Congressman, were the sort of fair and balanced leaders who are sorely lacking from today’s hyper-partisan politics.

Her opponent shows no such willingness to cooperate. For example, Yoder said, he has voted 33 times to repeal the health-care reform legislation that is already helping real Hoosiers.

“I’ll work across the aisle to find common ground and common solutions to the problems facing our country,” Yoder said. “My opponent has not worked across the aisle. Of the 19 bills that he has introduced in Congress, not a single bill has a Democratic co-sponsor. Time and again he has voted to slash funding that is so important to our middle class and working families, so he can pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. His priorities are wrong, and he should be fired.”

Young stood by his support of the Paul Ryan budget, which will cost 5 million jobs, according to the Economic Policy Institute, and wreck the fragile economic recovery. The Ryan budget also slashes Pell grants and job training, turns Medicare into a voucher program and would privatize Social Security.

“The Ryan budget would decimate the middle class while helping the top 2%,” Yoder said. “If there’s no middle class, we have no economy. I advocate a fair and balanced approach to deficit reduction and entitlement reform. First, we must let the Bush tax cuts expire for those who earn $250,000 or more while preserving middle class tax cuts. And there are plenty of places we can cut spending without putting the entire burden on the middle class.

“People in the 9th District don’t feel like Todd Young is on their side. I will be a fighter in Congress for real people. I will never lose touch with my constituents.”

Yoder will conduct a district-wide tour for the remaining seven days of the campaign.

Shelli Yoder, who is running for Congress in Indiana’s 9th District, today began airing a television advertisement that contrasts her support for middle class families with her opponent’s plan to gut programs that are important to those families.

“For generations, Medicare and Social Security have protected our seniors from sickness and poverty,” Yoder says. “Yet our Congressman, Todd Young, wants to privatize Social Security and turn Medicare into a voucher program.

“Not if I’m in Congress.”

Yoder continues:

“I was raised in rural Indiana, and know firsthand the struggles working families face. In Congress, I‘ll fight for good paying jobs and will always protect Social Security and Medicare.

“I’m Shelli Yoder, and I approved this message, because it’s time to put middle class families first.”

Yoder is fresh off a rousing debate performance Tuesday night in Franklin, where she criticized Young for his support of the Ryan budget, which guts all non-defense and asks the middle class to pay for tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

“There are competing visions for how to move the 9th District, and our country, forward,” Yoder said. “It all comes down to who voters can trust to act on their behalf, and voters have a clear choice: I’ll fight for the family room, while he’ll fight for the board room.”

For Immediate Release:

Today Shelli Yoder, Democratic candidate for the 9th Congressional seat, called upon her opponent, Todd Young, to disavow statements made by fellow Republican Richard Mourdock at last night’s debate. “Mr. Mourdock’s comments are simply an extension of the platform also followed by Mr. Young, yet Mitt Romney and Mike Pence both distanced themselves from Mr. Mourdock. I call upon Todd Young to do the same.”

Mourdock’s comment, when asked about abortion after a rape, said, “When life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something God intended to happen.” Mr. Mourdock is backpedaling from the remark, saying he is “misunderstood,” but a national outcry and demand for a sincere apology, rather than “clarity in my words,” continues.

Yoder said, “Mr. Mourdock is taking the heat, much like Todd Akin and his ‘legitimate rape’ comments, but he is not out of the mainstream of those running for office from his party. In fact, my opponent, Todd Young, was a cosponsor with Mr. Akin of legislation that attempted to define ‘forcible rape.’ My opponent is proud that he helped draft the Ryan budget; that document cuts services for women, reducing their ability to recover from rape.

“And make no mistake: Rape is prevalent in Indiana, a state that ranks in the top 5 in the country for rape of girls under the age of 18. Mr. Young’s response was a vote to defund the Violence Against Women Act. One of every four women is a survivor of domestic violence, and 1,200 women die from this cause, every year. His 33 votes to repeal healthcare provisions for us all include repeal of preventive mammograms, contraception to prevent such pregnancies, and other women’s health care.

“Either Todd Young condemns Mr. Mourdock’s out-of-touch remarks, or he joins with him in their belief,” Yoder said. “There is no middle ground where rape is concerned.”

JEFFERSONVILLE — Gender equality has become a major theme of the national election, and on Monday the Indiana Democratic Party seized on that theme by holding a rally for female state and national political candidates at Kye’s II in Jeffersonville.

“It’s consistent with our whole message this entire campaign, and that is reaching out to people who feel disenfranchised and feel like they don’t have a seat or a voice at the table in Washington anymore,” said Shelli Yoder, Democratic Party candidate for U.S. Congress. Yoder said her opponent, Republican Congressman Todd Young, “was voting against the interests of women again and again.”

Yoder was joined at Kye’s II by Vi Simpson, candidate for lieutenant governor; Kay Fleming, candidate for attorney general; Glenda Ritz, candidate for superintendent of public instruction; and Sandy Blanton and Sharon Grabowski, both of whom are running for the Indiana Statehouse.

Although poll numbers have hinted at a big year for Republicans on the state level, Simpson said a new internal poll puts her running mate, John Gregg, within “low single digits” of Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence.

“This is a winnable race,” she said.

Simpson implored her partymates to “dig a little deeper. We need to do a little more than we’ve done before.”

At a Democratic Party function focusing on women, it’s no surprise there were plenty of jokes referencing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s binder comment in the second debate.

“These women come from the community around us,” said event emcee and State Rep. Connie Sipes. “Not from binders, but the community around us.”

Sipes read from a 50s-era guide to being a good wife after saying that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney thought the 50s-era television show “Mad Men” was a show about current events. The gathered crowd laughed as Sipes read about the importance of having dinner ready for your husband when he gets home, preparing and lighting a fire for your husband in the cooler months and the importance of taking a 15-minute break before he comes home.

The function was kicked off by Grabowski, who led the audience in the singing of “God Bless America.”

Grabowski, a retired New Albany-Floyd County Schools teacher running in District 72, said she decided to run after reading about the things going on in Indianapolis in the paper. She listed the defunding of Planned Parenthood, $300 million in cuts to public education and right-to-work legislation among the motivating factors.

“I’m a retired teacher, and I’d like to learn ‘em a little something up there [in Indianapolis].”

Blanton, who is running in District 73, said that Republicans look to be trying to set the country back a century.

“If you look at what the state legislature has done the last two years, it’s becoming true and it’s scary,” Blanton said.

Ritz, who is running against Republican incumbent Tony Bennett, brought an air of confidence to the event.

“You’re looking at the next superintendent of public instruction,” Ritz said by way of introduction.

Ritz railed against the current structure of standardized testing issued to students in Indiana, and claimed to have support from voters in the Republican, Democratic and Tea Parties.

Yoder will meet Young in the first of two debates between the two 9th District candidates in Franklin tonight.

“I’m excited,” Yoder said. “I think this is going to be a great opportunity for folks to actually hear the voting record of my opponent and be able to see the stark contrast.”

In Southern Indiana’s 9th Congressional District, voters have a remarkable opportunity to elect a highly appealing candidate who offers a clear contrast with her Republican incumbent opponent, Todd Young, elected two years ago on a wave of tea party enthusiasm.

Shelli Yoder, 44, a Bloomington Democrat, a former Miss Indiana — and a former Republican — said she jumped into her first run for public office out of sheer frustration with partisan extremism and the obstructionist policies of her opponent.

So, while Mr. Young was busy joining House Republicans in repeated and fruitless votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Ms. Yoder began traveling the 13-county district, hearing stories from Hoosiers about their health care needs and how they benefited from the 2010 health care law.

Ms. Yoder described a mother whose son, 8, is recovering from cancer. Thanks to health care reform, she no longer fears caps on her son’s benefits or having him cut off the family’s insurance plan.

She met a woman with a painful ovarian disease who had no health insurance after her husband lost his job. But she was able to get coverage and care she needed through a federally authorized insurance pool, courtesy of health care reform.

And Ms. Yoder notes that 5,000 young adults in Indiana under age 26 now have access to health care through their parents’ plans, thanks to what Republicans deride as “Obamacare.”

We don’t know whether Mr. Young, 40, of Bloomington, is hearing similar stories. He declined an invitation to meet with The Courier-Journal editorial board.

But his record speaks for itself. In addition to seeking to repeal health care reform, Mr. Young, a member of the House budget committee, supports the budget plan of Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s running mate, which would drastically cut federal spending and reshape Medicare into a “voucher” plan for senior citizens.

Ms. Yoder’s story is simple and refreshing. A wife, mother and busy professional at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, she said she decided to run with little visibility and or organization because she believes someone needs to step up and truly represent the hard-working and struggling families in her district.

With a campaign treasury of about $300,000, Ms. Yoder is facing an uphill battle against her well-funded opponent, who has raised more than $1 million.

But Ms. Yoder already has surprised observers by winning a five-way primary election with 42 percent of the vote, carrying 12 of the 13 counties.

With the help of voters, perhaps she can surprise Mr. Young Nov. 6.
