Bloomington resident Shelli Yoder, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Indiana’s 9th Congressional District seat, issued a statement today vowing to prioritize federal funding to end violence against women and improve health outcomes for all Hoosiers.

Citing recent statistics from Indiana University and Center for Disease Control researchers, Yoder said the current climate of violence against girls in grades 9-12 in Indiana is unacceptable. “High school girls in Indiana have the second-highest rate of being raped in the country,” Yoder noted. “Yet the recently released budget proposal authored by Paul Ryan and endorsed by Todd Young slashes funding for violence against women initiatives. Furthermore, the Ryan-Young budget would devastate vital social services for women and their families, while giving trillions of dollars back to the wealthiest Americans and largest multi-national corporations.” (more…)

(Bloomington, IN) 9th District congressional candidate Shelli Yoder today called on Congress to reauthorize the law that provides relief to undergraduate students from high repayment costs of federally subsidized direct student loans. Yoder noted that 8 million students will soon have the interest rates on their college loans doubled if Congress fails to act before July 30, when the legislation, known as the College Cost Reduction and Access Act, is scheduled to expire.

Yoder, who worked her way through college and graduate school with the help of student loans, said, “The government should not be ballooning the cost of college at a time when many families are still struggling from the effects of the worst recession in generations. Congress should be finding ways to make college more affordable, rather than less so.” (more…)

She made her remarks standing outside the office building of Republican 9th District Congressman Todd Young, a supporter of the Republican budget drafted by Congressman Paul Ryan.

“Middle class families in this country are hurting” said Yoder. “Yet, the Ryan-Young Budget would cut relief to working families, effectively end Medicare as we know it, and slash food assistance programs for low-income children while giving more massive tax breaks to the rich.” (more…)
